Drivers are being warned of the risk of breaking the Highway Code and UK laws when personalising their cars. Fluffy steering wheels are being flagged as one accessory that could actually be dangerous - and there are others, too.

Personalising cars is becoming a massive trend. Many viral TikTok videos on the topic have been capturing the public's attention.

Yet experts at ChoiceQuote have issued warnings concerning some of these trending car accessories which could lead to trouble and potentially make you a more dangerous driver. Phil Leese, a specialist motor trading manager at ChoiceQuote, cautioned: "Adding car accessories to your vehicle is a great way to not only personalise your car to your own style but it can add extra convenience and storage.

"Some of these car accessories that have gained popularity on TikTok may not be worth the investment as they could lead to distracted driving which could result in penalty points, fines and invalidating insurance." He further advised: "Drivers should be cautious when adding accessories to their vehicles as they might not be as safe and aid the driving experience as they thought.

"If you are unsure if a car accessory is distracting it is best to avoid adding the accessory altogether." One example highlighted by ChoiceQuote is light-up window decorations, which the broker suggests could distract drivers.

A TikTok creator has become an overnight sensation, amassing 25.2 million views and 3.8 million likes for a video showcasing the fitting of a light-up window decoration in her car's quarter window. Yet some TikTok users were quick to highlight the potential danger, with one commenting "now you can't see your blind spot"

Despite the allure of such flashy adornments, insurance specialists at ChoiceQuote strongly advise against them. They caution that while they may add a personal flair, they also present a considerable safety hazard and could distract other motorists, possibly leading to accidents.

Adding a cover to your steering wheel is a straightforward way for motorists to customise their ride. However, ChoiceQuote cautions drivers about excessively fluffy and decorative steering wheel covers that do not provide sufficient grip.

While these accessories might enhance the look and feel of your vehicle, the plush fabric could undermine your control over the steering, potentially causing safety concerns. The Highway Code clearly states that if you lose control of your vehicle due to a slippery grip, it could be deemed as dangerous driving, which carries a penalty of up to 11 points on your licence.

Hence, when choosing a steering wheel cover, it's important to opt for one that ensures adequate grip.

LED lights are increasingly being used to add a touch of luxury and personality to vehicles, creating a fun and impressive environment for passengers. However, drivers should be mindful of the Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations 1989 when installing these lights.

These regulations stipulate that LED lights must not distract or dazzle other road users. Red LEDs are only allowed at the rear of the vehicle, white lights at the front, and blue lights are reserved for emergency vehicles.

Additionally, drivers need to ensure their LED lights meet MOT test standards and may require approval from their insurance provider. Non-compliance with these rules could result in penalties, fines, and even the seizure of the vehicle in severe cases.
