Shane Day Chargers Coaching Staff

Editorial Director

Shane Day is back with the Bolts.

The Chargers quarterbacks coach worked with Justin Herbert in 2021 and 2022 before spending last year with the Texans.

Day returned to the Bolts in February and is now tasked with overseeing a room that includes Justin Herbert, Easton Stick and Taylor Heinicke.

Here is our Coaches' Corner with Day:

To start off Shane, we haven't caught up since you re-joined the coaching staff. How happy are you to be back?

"Very happy to be back here. It's very interesting because obviously before, we were in a different location. Now we've got a new building so a lot of familiar faces, but a lot of new faces. It's been a lot of fun acclimating and it's great to be back with Justin. Great to be back in the quarterback room and it's been great meeting people that I haven't coached with before in Jim Harbaugh and Greg Roman, the staff that I haven't worked with. It's been phenomenal."

It probably goes without saying, but how big of a draw was it to come back and work with Justin?

"Yeah, a big part of it. We were together for those two years and we didn't really get to finish what we started. So it was good to come back and I know we were both excited about it. I was extremely excited about it and he was a big part of the reason why I came back. The other big piece was just the respect I have for Jim. He's won everywhere he's gone. He's a winner and I wanted to come and learn from him as well."

What have you seen from Jim up close the last couple of months?

"It's great having a guy that played quarterback in the NFL in the quarterback meetings. He adds so much to everything as far as from a quarterback player's perspective. He'll sit on the installs, he'll ask you questions, he'll make good suggestions. He's just got a good feel for playing quarterback and then tailoring everything to make it as easy as possible for the quarterback."

How do you like working with Chargers Offensive Coordinator Greg Roman?

"He's been great. I didn't know G-Ro before I took this job. And from the outside, people think he's a run-first guy. But he knows a ton about the passing game. He has his own offensive passing game and he's got a way to make it all fit together. And he's done a great job of installing it to the staff, to the quarterbacks. I think we're really coming together as far as, any time you get a new offense there's kind of an acclimation period, but I feel like right about where we're at in this season, like we're all on the same page."

From a general perspective, what are the vibes like in the Bolts quarterback room?

"I think we got a really good room. We have Justin, we have Easton but we now have Taylor as well and I think he was a good addition. We have good chemistry there. And then Passing Game Coordinator Marcus Brady is in there, he's been excellent. He's got a quarterback's perspective as well. Marc Trestman is in there and he's added a lot to the room. And like I said, Jim has added a lot to the room too. We have a really good room with a lot of good, different viewpoints and we're able to really help facilitate the game planning for the quarterbacks."

You know Easton well, how does he help the QB room?

"He was another piece of the reasons that I came back. We worked really hard when he was here to kind of elevate his game and I got to see him even when I wasn't here last year. He kept growing and growing and growing and he's taken another step this year. He's a great corner man for me, he's a great corner man for Justin. He helps us and understands all the pieces of the puzzle on how to interact. He's almost like an extra coach."

Final one for you, did you know Taylor at all before he was traded here?

"No. I had seen him before and he played Washington and played really well to finish it out and had a big season, won quite a few games. So his reputation has been really good. I know a lot of guys that have coached him and they all said glowing things and that he is great to work with. They said he's a great player, great competitor and he's been all of that. He's been a great add to the room."
