NAPA Auto Parts van driver dies after suffering critical injuries in three-vehicle crash in Libertyville
Authorities say the driver of a NAPA Auto Parts van has died after he suffered critical injuries in a three-vehicle crash that shut down a busy intersection in Libertyville for hours on Friday.
The Libertyville Police Department and Libertyville Fire Department responded around 11:46 a.m. Friday to the intersection of Winchester Road and Butterfield Road in Libertyville.
Libertyville Police Department Sgt. Dusan Racic said officers received a report of a multi-vehicle crash with injuries.
Officers arrived to find a crash involving a Chevrolet SUV, a NAPA Auto Parts van and a UPS box truck.
The van sustained heavy damage after it appeared to have been t-boned by the UPS truck.
Libertyville Deputy Police Chief Matt Goze said Saturday that the driver from the van was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
He was later pronounced dead in the hospital. An autopsy is being performed on the man on Monday at the Lake County Coroner’s Office.
The coroner’s office is withholding the identity of the 77-year-old man pending notification to his family.
The Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) was called to the scene to conduct a full crash investigation.
The intersection of Butterfield Road and Winchester Road has been completely shut down for several hours. It remained closed until 4 p.m.
Goze said the cause of the crash is unknown and remains under investigation by the Libertyville Police Department and MCAT.
